The 2011 Jian Zhou Oration

14 Sep 2011

On the evening of Tuesday the 13th of September, the annual Jian Zhou Memorial Oration was held at Customs House and attended by over 150 UQDI researchers, staff and respected guests.

The Oration is held each year to commemorate the life and contributions of the late Dr Jian Zhou, one of the founding members of The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute, and co-discoverer of the papillomavirus virus-like particles that form the basis of the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.

The event opened with a striking performance by Opera Queensland’s Young and Developing Artist Recital and a presentation on the life and memory of Dr Jian Zhou by Professor Matt Brown.

Professor Peter Visscher, Head of Statistics and Principal Research Fellow at QIMR was the guest orator at the event and presented on the topic of genetics of common diseases: past, present and future.
