It’s sometimes hard to visualize the dynamic process of cell division by looking at the illustrations in text books, and since a trip through the cell cycle takes several hours, it’s not a process that can be easily demonstrated in the laboratory. In this exercise, you will set up a culture of human cancer cells and use time-lapse photography to visualize the process of mitosis, generating a video which demonstrates all of the stages. In addition, you will treat these cells with a range of common chemotherapeutic drugs which interrupt the cell cycle at particular points and determine the effect of these drugs on cell division.
