Professional Development programs

Enhancing the professional practise of school staff essential to engaging students in STEM. SPARQ-ed provides a variety of opportunities including:

  • Twilight workshop sessions
  • Whole day workshops
  • VET Currency/Validation for schools offering Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement or Certificate III Laboratory Skills

Workshop participants will receive documentation suitable for use as evidence of Continuing Professional Development for the Queensland College of Teachers.

Professional Development workshop (2 x days)

Date: Thursday 1 December & Friday 2 December 2022
Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm
Location: SPARQ-ed, Level 2 Translational Research Institute (TRI), 37 Kent St. Woolloongabba QLD
Description:  Teachers are invited to apply to become a 'Teacher Tutor' during the upcoming Junior Research Engagement Program for students in Year 8 & 9.  You will 'work-shadow' SPARQ-ed staff while they implement the program, providing you with an opportunity to develop your own skills and understandings.  Students will be atttempting to answer the question: "What is the difference between genes and gene expression?"  They will learn how to use micropipettes and complete techniques such as bacterial transformation, PCR and gel electrophoresis.

Professional Development workshop

Date: Friday 24 February 2023
Time: 9:00am - 2:30pm
Location: SPARQ-ed, Level 2 Translational Research Institute (TRI), 37 Kent St. Woolloongabba QLD
Description: Teachers will learn about how researchers at TRI use engineered melanoma cells to better observe different stages of the cell cycle and how they are affected by potential chemotherapies. They will perform laboratory and computer based activities that incorporate aspects of science, technology, engineering and maths. Teachers will be able to adapt these activities for classroom use. The session will address Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: 2, 3, 6 & 7.
Number of participants: 24 pax
Cost: $100pp

SPARQ-ed fees

  • Whole day workshop =  $100 per person
  • Twilight session workshop = $35 per person

Fees are finalised through the University’s UQ Pay online booking system, invoices are not generated at SPARQ-ed. Follow the direct URL link provided to finalise payment, a Tax Invoice/Receipt will be emailed to you confirming payment.

Sessions may be conducted face-face or virtually, contact SPARQ-ed for more details.  Events may be cancelled if insufficient registrations are received.
