Teacher development programs

Enhancing the professional practise of teachers is essential to engaging students in STEM. SPARQ-ed provides a variety of opportunities including:

  • Twilight information sessions
  • Teacher workshops—focussing on the suggested and mandatory pracs from the QLD Biology syllabus
  • VET Currency/Validation for schools offering Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement or Certificate III Laboratory Skills

Workshop participants will receive documentation suitable for use as evidence of Continuing Professional Development for the Queensland College of Teachers.

Biology Unit 4 Biotechnology – Twilight Sessions

SPARQ-ed will be holding two twilight sessions to review the content of Unit 4 Biology – Biotechnology focus.

Session 1 will provide an overview of Biotechnology, provide some detail on recombinant DNA and cloning protocols.  To end the session, the use of restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis techniques to evaluate DNA insert orientation will be explained.

Session 2 will focus on bacterial transformation techniques and genotyping.  Resources will be provided, and data appraisal practise strategies will be explored.

Resources for teaching these complex concepts will be provided throughout both sessions. Case studies of current biomedical research being conducted in the Translational Research Institute will also be discussed.
